2nd Half Havoc Spurs VCU to 18-0 Run, Victory
by Charlie Krausse November 26, 2020
When VCU woke up Monday morning they were preparing to head to Knoxville to open their season at SEC front runner, Tennessee. Positive COVID tests in Knoxville cancelled that. Three hours later, VCU learned they now are part of the Bad Boy Motors Crossover Classic. Bring on defending Mountain West tournament champions, Utah State.
The Rams dove into their old bag of tricks whipping out their ‘Havoc’ defense in the second half to defeat Utah State, 85-69. The difference in the game was an 18-0 run by VCU, while holding Utah State scoreless for over 8 minutes of game play.
“It was a team win, lots of guy contributed,” said Coach Mike Rhodes. He added, “Good first game, good start.”
VCU forced 18 total turnovers; 10 of which we steals. Led by Corey Douglas’ three, the Rams also added 7 team blocks. The difference of the game was, “a little Havoc,” put Rhodes. “That press is a great equalizer for us.”
Sophomore, Bones Hyland led the Rams with 23 points, starting the game making his first four 3-pointers. While Vince Williams scored a career best, 15 points. Keyshawn Curry added 10 points with 6 rebounds. Highly touted freshman, Ace Baldwin offered 7 assists to his 2 turnovers. The Rams, as a whole, shot 53% and made 10 three pointers.
VCU advances to the semi-finals of the Bad Boy Motors Crossover Classic on Thanksgiving Day. Their opponent, #16 West Virginia. Coach Bob Huggins, 'Press' Virginia matchup will be interesting to say the least as Mike Rhodes offers his defensive Havoc in response. Earlier in the evening, West Virginia defeated South Dakota State, 79-71.
VCU opens the season 1-0. Last year the Rams finished the regular season on a downward trend, finishing 18-13 overall. This year, Rhodes has said many of times, he loves this team.
