“ Where it began, I can’t begin to know. But then I know its growing strong.” Neil Diamond might have described Coastal Carolina’s situation the best. And no coincidence, his classic hit can be found all over sporting events in Conway, SC.
Fall 2020 was a season to remember for Coastal Carolina University. So, where to begin? I can’t begin to know. Honestly. The obvious first guess is with football, but the Chanticleers experienced so much more fame and fortune than just their football team. Boys Soccer won the Sun Belt Championship and is ranked currently 5th in the nation going into their spring non-conference season. While girls volleyball finished the regular season undefeated and won the Sun Belt regular season championship, only losing in the tournament championship, in a 5-set thriller.
The awards are plenty as well. Football alone kept the Athletic Department busy with the volume of press releases and honors in sharing out to the media. The Chanticleer football team received over 40 post-season awards. That does not include any weekly honors the team accrued throughout the season. Highlighted by Head Coach Jamey Chadwell being named Coach of the Year by over 10 different major organizations including the Associated Press Coach of the Year and the FWAA Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.

Defensive End standout Tarron Jackson earned Consensus All-American status, meaning he earned multiple (four) All American honors (AP, AFCA, WCFF, FWAA). Redshirt Freshman Grayson McCall earned both Freshman All-American and FWAA’s Most Inspirational Freshman.
After his ACL injury sidelined him for the majority of his 2019 season, Linebacker, Silas Kelly earned the 2020 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year, leading the team in tackles and adding 5 sacks to his resume.
Staying on the defensive side of the ball, Defensive Lineman, C.J. Brewer, was named to the AP 3rd Team All American, as well as, a Phil Steele’s Honorable Mention All-American.
Freshman Willie Lampkin earned four various Freshman All-American awards to cement his excellent start to his time at Coastal Carolina.
Additionally, both Tarron Jackson and Runningback, C.J. Marable were invited to multiple Senior All-Star Games, including the Hula Bowl, East-West Shrine Bowl and the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

That’s just football. The beauty of a college campus is they have multiple sports running each season. Soccer is no exception. After earning Sun Belt Tournament MVP, Goal Keeper, Tor Saunders found his name in the spotlight again in January. The 6’5 keeper was the 72nd pick in the 2021 MLS Draft, as he will make his new home in Nashville as the newest member of Nashville SC.
Head Coach Shaun Docking was named 2020 Sun Belt Coach of the Year. Being named to the All Sun Belt Team along with Tor Saunders were Midfielder, Marcello Jones and Defender, Mael Couteau.

The Lady’s Volleyball team had a season to remember, as well. Finishing their season nationally ranked 14th, the Chants’ Opposite Hitter, Anett Nemeth was named Sun Belt Player of the Year. Not to be outdone by his campus counterparts, Head Coach, Jozsef Foreman was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year.
On top of that, Outside Hitter, Ani Bozdeva and Setter, Brigitta Petrenko were named to the Sun Belt 1st Team while DS (Defensive Specialist), Lina Perugini was named to the Sun Belt 2nd Team.
In all, Fall 2020 brought so much attention to the campus of Coastal Carolina University. Including, most notably, ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday, December 5, 2020. Where, the nation witnessed one of the best, if not the best, college football games of the year. Coming down to the game’s final play, Coastal Carolina defeated BYU 22-17.
The popularity of Coastal Carolina is arguably at an all-time high. The logo of the Chanticleer is now fully recognizable anywhere and everywhere.
