‘Game of a Lifetime’ as Brewer Continues to Strive for Chanticleers
by Charlie Krausse November 25, 2020
“He had a game of a lifetime,” described Coach Chadwell in reference to defensive lineman, CJ Brewer. The Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week had 14 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 3 tackles for losses, 1 quarterback hurry and a partridge in a pear tree. All of this against four time defending Sun Belt Champions, Appalachian State Mountaineers.
Success for Brewer is not just from this past weekend. He currently ranks 2nd in the Sun Belt Conference out of all defensive linemen in tackles and 1st in the conference for all defensive linemen in sacks. The difference this year, “I’m taking care more of my body than in the past, getting in the film room and working hard every day,” replied Brewer.
“He’s a very intelligent player. He knows how people are going to block him,” added Chadwell. This probably helps understand how and why Brewer had a monster game when it mattered most.
It can be argued Brewer’s sack on Appalachian State’s Zach Thomas late in the game set up teammate’s D’Jordan Strong’s pick-6 on the very next play. In reference to his sack, Strong has his opinions of the play, “That was the greatest play I’ve ever seen in person in my life.”
Over the past four games, the Chanticleers have allowed a total of zero second half touchdowns. Although it still can be argued they are drinking a magic potion or kool-aid, Coach Chadwell stated its just water and orange juice. While Brewer believes the success of the 2nd halves needs to be credited to halftime adjustments made by the coaching staff. “We just come out with extra ‘juice’ and ready to go so the offense can do what they do,” added Brewer.
The Chanticleers are now one win away from clinching the Sun Belt East Division title as they travel to San Marcos, TX this weekend to battle Texas State. “We have the same mindset each week, go 1-0,” said Brewer. Before they play, they will celebrate Thanksgiving as a team. They will have an early practice then have a meal together, as best as possible. On Friday, its back to business as the team begins their descent to Texas.
“We’re going to keep proving everyone wrong,” continued Brewer. That everyone can now include the College Football Playoff committee. The first rankings were released Tuesday night and the Chanticleers found themselves ranked 20th, even though the Coach’s and Media polls had the boys in teal ranked higher.
Coastal Carolina could have as many as five games remaining on their schedule. After this week, they then return home to against Liberty before closing out the regular season in a makeup game at Troy. From there, The Chants look to represent the East Division against presumably Louisiana for the Sun Belt Championship. Finally, Coastal will play in their first ever bowl game.
