Jackson, Seniors Avenge Previous Seasons Results
by Charlie Krausse November 4, 2020
Coastal Carolina is only in their fourth year at the Football Bowl Subdivision while part of the Sun Belt Conference. The first three, the Chanticleers always felt close but could never get over the proverbial hump. The last two seasons Coastal Carolina missed out on being bowl eligible by one game, each season.
This year, the Chanticleers are out to avenge previous season misses. Coastal has taken the Sun Belt Conference by storm this season. It was the Louisiana road victory on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, that made senior all Sun Belt Defensive End, Tarron Jackson realize something special was happening. “The game plan on defense started coming together,” stated Jackson. “The chemistry came together,” he added.
If Coastal Carolina is the Avengers, then Jackson is Iron Man, his favorite Avenger. Iron Man is one of the main leaders for Earth’s mightiest heroes, as Jackson is one of the leaders for the Chanticleer's mightiest heroes. “I feel I lead by example. I’m one of the first ones to the weight room and to practice,” said the All-Conference defenseman. While Iron Man brings the cool gadgets, Jackson feels he brings the energy. Regardless, both leave explosive fireworks wherever they go.
Jackson is second out of all defensive linemen in sacks for the Sun Belt Conference, only teammate C.J. Brewer is ahead of him. Jackson also leads all defensive players in forced fumbles in the conference. “Coaches are holding us to the same standards every practice. And it’s not just the coaches, as players, we are holding ourselves to high standards,” stated Jackson. “We have a lot of older guys who help keep us accountable.”
To continue with the Iron Man comparisons, as Tony Stark is a super math genius from MIT, Jackson’s favorite class is Calculus. Not sure if he exclaims ‘Rhombus!’ after a sack, though!
The average player may not remember each result two to three seasons previous, but all know the team just became bowl eligible for the first time ever in program history. With their win this past Saturday, the Chanticleers have picked up their sixth win in the season, most since joining the Sun Belt Conference. Thus, all but guaranteeing Coastal Carolina a trip to their first ever bowl game.
Swarm Black Swarm, swarm to the ball – the team’s defensive motto, has also been the team’s goal for the season. Coastal Carolina is first in the Sun Belt in sacks (6th in the Nation). The Chanticleers also lead the Sun Belt Conference is both Interceptions and in Fumbles Forced.
Coastal’s road to greater success does not get any easier. This Saturday under the lights of Brooks Stadium, the Chanticleers host South Alabama. The Jaguars are a half-game back from the lead in the West Division. Jackson seems to be enjoying the ride, “We’re just going to do what we do.” Expect the Black Swarm defense to swarm this Saturday night.
