Gallagher Leads and Swarms to Help Chanticleers Defense
by Charlie Krausse October 7, 2020
On camera, you see the kid from California with an energetic personality. The mullet and the play on the field to back it up. You see the excitement and passion that drives this senior linebacker. What you do not see is everything else adding layers of depth to his demeanor.
A 6’1, 230 pound Finance major, Teddy Gallagher has a different side to him that most simply do not know about. Earning Dean’s List for the fall of 2019, Gallagher spoke about his role as a leader on the “Black Swarm” defense (the nickname given to describe the Chanticleers defense). “In my younger years, I wasn’t a huge vocal leader. I just tried to show how to do it right. But as you get voted captain, everyone looks at you to say things in certain positions.”
On the field, even most viewers at home can attest, Gallagher is one of the louder ones. Off the field he teaches the younger guys how to do things right. That’s called integrity, a strong trait in a leader. That co-captain for the Chants has racked up many of honors he continues to build upon. Pending on which preview magazine purchased and read, Gallagher is either an All Pre-Season 1st or 2nd Teamer for this 2020 season. In his junior year, he was a 3rd Team All Sun Belt Linebacker. He is amongst the league leaders in tackles, a month into the season.
“Always run to the football,” adds Gallagher. Even in practice if the pass is incomplete the entire defense is required to move to the ball and recover the ball. “So when you see us play, you see eleven hats swarming to the ball, every play.” This is a direct correlation to effort. Not just on Saturdays but throughout the ‘work week’ as well. “If you don’t give the effort, you’re not going to play.”
Taking aim at the Chanticleers 2020 schedule, Gallagher and the Black Swarm defense have lived up to the hype after three games. In the season opener in Lawrence, the Chanticleers held All Big XII runningback, Pooka Williams to just 67 yards rushing and only allowed 36% of 3rd Downs converted.
Fast-forward to their conference opener versus Arkansas State, the Chants allowed just 36 yards rushing and the Red Wolves only converted in 33% of their third down opportunities.
The ball hawk mentality does not stop with the run, the Chanticleers are currently ranked 2nd in the nation in Sacks and in the top 10 in the nation in turnover margin.
Put all of these aspects together and that is a more complete picture of Teddy Gallagher. A senior linebacker with a true passion of the game and with the integrity and internal discipline to work Sundays through Fridays, as well, to help his team truly earn the title “Black Swarm” defense. Not to mention, help the Chants earn their 3-0 start to the 2020 season.
