Chants Prove to McAfee, Nation That Coastal's Teal is For Real
by Charlie Krausse October 3, 2020
Earlier today on ESPN’s College GameDay, personality and part-time WWE Superstar, Pat McAfee said he has no belief in Coastal Carolina. 52-23 of a score later, McAfee and the viewing nation, thanks to coverage by espn2, proved Coastal Carolina is built to compete at the top level of the Sun Belt Conference.
It did not start off as dominating as the score indicated, down 14-7 in the 2nd quarter to Arkansas State, CJ Marable darted to the left hand side to tie the game. Then, the turning point of the game occurred when placekicker, Massimo Biscardi pooch kicked it, allowing Coastal to recover and steal a possession. He then capped off the bonus drive with a 42 yard field goal.
The Chanticleers dominated from there on. After being pushed back to their own 6-yard line, Redshirt Quarterback, Grayson McCall led Coastal on their drive of the season, running 18 plays and going the full 94 yards for a score. More importantly, it took up 8:38 on the clock. Throughout the drive McCall found wide receiver Sam Denmark for 3 catches totaling 48 yards. The Chanticleers converted three first downs on the drive, as well as a 4th down conversion. McCall concluded the drive with a three yard scoring pass to Marable.
Momentum and ball possession was huge for Coastal during the 2nd quarter, controlling the ball 13:10 seconds. Thus, Arkansas State only possessed it for one minute and fifty seconds.
Coastal took the 2nd half kickoff and once again worked the clock, going 14 plays and 83 yards taking up another almost eight minutes off the clock. The drive ended with Kameron Brown’s touchdown reception from McCall.
The pooch kick might have been the turning point play of the game, but the break the spirit of the Red Wolves play when the Chanticleers converted a major third and long. After an ugly broken play where both runningbacks ran into each other and then Brown dropped a wide open cross route underneath, McCall to Brown combo came up big on 3rd and 14 as the two hit up for a 47 yard completion deep down the left side of the field.
McCall ended the game with 322 yards passing and 4 touchdowns, with only one true freshman mistake. As he had a simple check down pass open, instead he threw it over the middle late, causing his first interception of the season. McCall added another 44 yards on the ground.
The Chanticleers with their Top 15 scoring offense in the nation will only move up in the stat rankings after this week, as Coastal put up 539 yards in total offense. They also upped their scoring average per game to 44.67 points per game.
Coastal Carolina also earned their first win against Arkansas State. The Chanticleers stand alone in first place in the Sun Belt Eastern Conference with a 3-0, 1-0 record. Due to schedule changes, Coastal Carolina now prepares for their biggest game yet next week, on the road in the Cajun Dome versus the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.
