Twenty four hours after their first game since January 23rd, the Jackrabbits returned to their winning ways, defeating the Coyotes of South Dakota, 89-78. The Coyotes took the first game in the back to back series the previous night. But tonight, especially in the second half, it was all South Dakota State University.
Doug Wilson, after only scoring 2 points in the first half, added 19 points in the second. In fact, most of their points tonight came from the inside. “He’s only getting better and better,” said Head Coach, Eric Henderson.
Adding to the inside scoring was Matt Dentinger with 21 points, as well. The Jackrabbits totaled 46 points inside the paint. “Matty was a beast tonight. When you take it to the basket, good things happen,” added Henderson.
“I think they won all the hustle plays and the 50-50 balls last night and tonight we improved on that to help us tonight,” said Henderson.
The one-two punch aided the 3-point shooting of the Jacks. South Dakota State added seven more three pointers to their season total. Normally a 40% three-pointing team, the Jacks only made just over 31% of their shots. However, two of those shots came near the end of the first half, as Baylor Scheierman nailed not one, but two three pointers. This helped cut the Coyotes lead to six points.
South Dakota had won 10 games in a row going into the back-half of the weekend games and was undefeated in the Summit League. The Jackrabbits improved to 11-4, 5-1. In year that will lead to unbalanced schedules and standings, the Coyotes will hold a percentage advantage over South Dakota State with a 9-1 conference record.
“Ball movement was better. We weren’t stagnant. And everyone moved the ball around,” stated Henderson. The Jacks had 76 possessions and only committed 5 turnovers and added 17 assists.
South Dakota State now focuses their attention to Oral Roberts. The Jacks head to Tulsa as now every game matters even greater. With just three weekend series remaining in the regular season, Oral Roberts rounds out the top four in the Summit.
