The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers clinched the Sun Belt East Division with their 42-14 win over Texas State Saturday night. Additionally, not only was it a milestone game for the Chanticleers, but some individuals, as well. Wide receiver Jaivon Heiligh surpassed 100 career receptions while runningback CJ Marable had a career high 3 rushing touchdowns in a game.
The Chants used a heavy ground game approach in a very, wet and rainy afternoon in San Marcos, TX; churning up 406 rushing yards. Eight different Coastal players touched the ball on the ground. “Today was about letting the backs do what they do best and it was nice having the younger guys getting some playing time, too,” said Coach Chadwell.
Its been widely reported that Coastal Carolina was picked pre-season last in the Sun Belt Conference. Now, they will host Louisiana for the Sun Belt Championship. He will never ask for the credit and offer it to the players, but one of the main reasons for the Chanticleers success is the leadership of head coach Jamey Chadwell. “He’s done amazing things for the program,” said star defensive end Tarron Jackson.
The game itself was put away in the second quarter where the Chanticleers took a 35-7 lead into the half. The Chants put together over 570 yards of total offense against Texas State. Quarterback Grayson McCall was asked more of the read option than throwing the ball, but the freshman sensation still put up over 150 yards in the air, with two more touchdowns and no interceptions. McCall now has 20 touchdown passes still to just one interception.
Marable knew he was going to get his looks early as the coaching staff told him, “Its going be your day,” added Marable. The back embraced the sloppy weather and the opportunity. In fact, did not realize he set a personal best three rushing touchdowns. “I’ve scored three TDs before, but it was like 2 rushing and 1 receiving,” commented Marable.
One of the soft-spoken players to ever speak to the press has had a very loud and dynamic career. The junior receiver had three receptions for 35 yards and 2 TDs, thus crossing the century mark in career receptions. “He’s the most consistent receiver. He doesn’t complain. If we ask him to block, he blocks. If we ask him to go deep over the middle, he goes deep,” added Chadwell.
Tarron Jackson added 2.5 more sacks to his total this season, giving him 8.5 this season.
This is the best start for Coastal Carolina since becoming a full FBS school and the best start for any Sun Belt Conference team. The Chanticleers join Notre Dame and BYU as the only three teams in the country to earn a 9-0 record.
Next up for Coastal Carolina is former Big South Conference rival, Liberty Flames. Liberty might not be undefeated, but the Flames have a 9-1 record led by quarterback Malik Willis.
