Beck Quiet and Humble,
Chants Shout in Season Opener
by Charlie Krausse August 30, 2024
Year two under Head Coach Tim Beck started the season off with a statement road victory over Jacksonville State, 55-27. The Chants opened the game as a +4.5 Vegas underdog (kickoff they were +3.5), but the spread (and moneyline) were hardly in question.
All preseason national media and procrastinators simply speculated on how Coastal Carolina would do this season. Who would start where. Who would likely step up to being playmakers. One of Coach Beck’s strengths, and those that closely follow the program already know this, is his gamesmanship. Beck’s approach has not changed since his introductory press conference. He remains close chested and whether its fear of creating what was formally known as ‘Locker Room Art’ or simply because “why should I share with you my gameplan” as he referenced on the Pre-Game Press Conference, Beck continues to keep his inner monologue to himself.
The Offensive Line showed up big Thursday night. They allowed zero sacks, helped the offense average 7.2 yards per play and they helped rush the ball for just under 300 yards. When asked to give a verb to describe the line’s performance, Beck simply said, “I am really pleased. Coach Warehime got those guys ready. We played very physical, we played a lot of players up front. And our guys played with a chip on our shoulder.” This included transfer portal recipient Heston Edwards starting at center for injured captain Zac Elam.
Beck may continue to remain humble and word chosen, but his team’s on the field results made a loud and profound statement heard through the college football nation Thursday night. Coastal’ s offense dominated. The Chants racked up 552 yards total offense, 294 of that on the ground. They averaged 7.2 yards per play and most impressively their Offensive Scoring Efficiency Rating over 100 plays was 71.4. That number will be one of the best in the nation.
