Auburn Practice Day 1: Real Opportunity = Real Moments

Day one for the Auburn Tigers is under wraps. Coach Malzhan spoke frank during his afternoon press conference stating, “This year is all about being flexible. The teams that can, will have a big advantage.”
The main theme he emphasized throughout the presser was creating depth. Not just two deep like normal, but now three deep. “Teams with the most depth will have a big advantage.” Less experienced players will now have a great opportunity to shine given the situation Coach Malzhan has provided his team.
On the offensive line alone, 10-12 guys are fighting for the starting spot. “Real opportunities = real moments,” said Malzhan. Malzhan is allowing Coach Morris and Coach Bicknell the freedom of working with the players and forming their own decisions in regards to building the depth chart, rather than interjecting his perceived opinions from previous seasons.
Coach Malzhan made it clear, “this is year of adjustments.” He insisted Auburn coaching staff needs to prepare the 3rd stringers for action. “We’re going to get creative,” he added.
As far as practices will go, the Tigers will practice Mondays through Thursdays during the preseason, take Fridays off, then scrimmage on Saturdays. Scrimmages will be more 11 on 11 than ever before.
Waiting to join the team stuck in customs is international punter, Oscar Chapman who arrived from Australia recently. “Once he is allowed to join us, he will,” added Malzhan.
Before even finding out about his Week 1 opponent, Coach Malzhan reference Auburn has played the toughest schedule since 2013 (the year he took over as Head Coach). Adding the Tigers are used to the grind that is the SEC West schedule. It was announced on the Paul Finebaum Show, Auburn will host Kentucky on September 26, 2020 for both team’s season opener.
