2nd Half Coastal Rides Big Wave Over App State
by Charlie Krausse November 22, 2020
For the fourth game in a row, Coastal Carolina’s black swarm defense has not allowed a touchdown. In one of the more exciting games in all of college football, the Chanticleers went on a 25-6 run in the second half to defeat the four time defending Sun Belt Conference Champions, Appalachian State Mountaineers, 34-23.
This game had the feeling of something big. Today’s matchup between the powerhouses felt like a matchup amongst grown men. Both teams had early strikes. Appalachian State started off quick with a 1-yard run by Camrun Peoples on the Mountaineers opening drive. Not to be outdone, on the Chanticleer’s first play of their first drive, redshirt freshman quarterback, Grayson McCall hit tight-end, Isaiah Likely deep for a 75-yard touchdown strike. However extra point was missed.
With nine seconds remaining in the first half, former Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, Zach Thomas hit Christian Wells down the sideline for a 25 yard score to put the Mountaineers up 17-9 at the break.
Coastal Carolina received the second half kickoff. Three plays later, McCall scrambled on the left side then turned on the jets, scrambling for a 62-yard touchdown. The Chants tried chasing points as they missed the two point conversion.
Coastal took their first lead of the game with just over six minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter. Earlier this season, the Chanticleers tried running the play made most-famous by Tim Tebow, where McCall faked the QB draw and then looked for CJ Marable over the middle. The first time, McCall put it over Marable’s wrong shoulder. This afternoon, McCall connected for a touchdown with Marable to take the lead.
Defense came up big throughout the second half. CJ Brewer had his best game of the season recording 15 tackles with 1.5 sacks and a QB Hurry. Appalachian State starting runningback, Camrun Peoples dominated in the first half, rushing for 171 yards. Although, in the second half, the power runningback was held to just an additional 7 yards.
In comparison, at the end of the first half, Coastal only had 15 yards rushing. While, in the second half, the boys in teal put up 154 yards on the ground.
Sun Belt Conference Interception leader, D’Jordn Strong had two major picks. The second sealed the victory as it was returned 38 yards for a touchdown with just over a minute remaining in the game.
Grayson McCall led the offense with 200 yards in the air, and another 69 yards on the ground.
Coastal Carolina improved to 8-0 with three games remaining. The Chanticleers next travel to San Marcos, TX to face Texas State next Saturday.
